Racing towards a more sustainable future with Upstream’s carbon removal program

By Anastasia Samaras

Recently, we announced the launch of Upstream Accelerate, a way for athletes to raise sponsorship by selling Collectibles to their fans leveraging email and social media. Our first initiative with Upstream Accelerate is with the Motorsports community, where racing fans get the opportunity to sponsor some of their favorite athletes.

Race Without A Trace™

With this initiative comes an exciting addition for racers who are working towards a more sustainable future….Race Without A Trace™, Upstream’s carbon removal program!

Upstream is proud to offer racers the opportunity to drive change by purchasing carbon removal units and linking them to a digital replica of a racecar on Upstream for a transparent and immutable record of sustainability.

Just 4 easy steps!

  1. Create Your Racecar Profiles: Open Upstream, tap ‘Collectibles’ in the top navigation, then tap ‘Add Car.’ Add a photo and enter a name for the car you’re registering. Then tap ‘Add Car’ again.
  2. Buy Carbon Removal Units: Enter the total liters of fuel consumed for a race event/journey and tap ‘Pay Now.’ These units are linked to your digital racecar, and this record is available publicly for fans to follow along by scanning your car’s QR code.
  3. Record Your Contributions: Each carbon removal unit purchased is immortalized with a unique Upstream digital receipt that’s timestamped on a blockchain for a permanent history of your carbon removal contributions. View under ‘My Cars.’
  4. Add New Digital Vehicles to Your Fleet: Continue purchasing carbon removal units linked to the same digital racecar, or create more digital racecars or transport trucks, for each race event. Display your fleet on your site or social media.

Let’s break down the impact you can make

  • During a typical race weekend, a race car may consume around ~200 liters of fuel.
  • It is known that burning a liter of petrol emits approximately 2.35 kilograms of CO₂.
  • That means a single race could generate 470kg of CO₂, which at $0.58* per kilogram of carbon removal, means that it costs $271 to remove this race event’s carbon emissions!

How it works

Upstream purchases carbon removal units from Frontier’s growing portfolio and sells 1:1 to racers. These carbon removal unit purchases are linked to a digital racecar, and when the racecar is scanned, a history of these purchases is displayed.

Frontier is an advanced market commitment to buy $1B+ of permanent carbon removal between 2022 and 2030. It was founded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, McKinsey, and tens of thousands of businesses using Stripe Climate.

By participating in Upstream’s carbon removal program, you’re not just racing for the win, you’re racing without a trace! Take the checkered flag for both speed and sustainability — download the Upstream app today and get started!

Together, let’s shift gears towards a transparent and immutable record of sustainability, one race at a time!
